Emphasizing safety and control during insulin injections: Protecting Healthcare Workers

Start Date:11/8/2023

Start Time:1:00 PM EST

Duration:60 minutes

Abstract:

According to national needlestick injury data, the largest numbers of injuries occur during insulin injection .1  This has facilities moving more towards the use of pens and pen needles and away from multi-dose vials and hypodermic syringes.  Pens with safety needles have gained popularity over alternative insulin delivery methods due to their higher degree of control for patients, ease of use and ability to minimize needlestick injuries (NSIs) among clinical staff.

This presentation will describe national injury data for insulin delivery, provide occupational health insights, and help participants provide better protection and control for clinicians and a comfortable injection experience for patients with diabetes.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Understand why the use of insulin pen needles is increasing
  2. Explain the risks of needle stick injuries (NSIs) and the use of disposable syringes and multidose vials
  3. Discover how to evaluate and consider the right sharps device to help prevent NSIs
  4. Describe the benefits of using a pen needle with a visible needle and manually activated safety mechanism
