What used to be simply ‘sustainable’ has now shifted to circular. This focus on circularity is forcing every stakeholder in beauty to collaborate, innovate and push the limits on better sourcing, greener chemistry, smarter packaging and savvy retail models. Manufacturers are being encouraged to think circular from the start, with cradle-to-cradle design the ultimate goal. We’ll speak to those leading the charge and hear from design and formulation experts on hurdles and opportunities in the space, aiming to better understand how industry can make circular beauty a mainstream reality.

Adrien has been with the L’Oreal Group for 15 years, undertaking roles in Paris, Rio de Janeiro and most recently London with experiences in both global and local teams. Tom Szaky is founder and CEO of TerraCycle, a global leader in the collection and repurposing of complex waste streams. TerraCycle operates in 20 countries, working with some of the world’s largest brands, retailers and manufacturers to create national platforms to recycle products and packaging that currently go to landfill or incineration. In May 2019, TerraCycle launched Loop, a circular reuse platform that enables consumers to purchase products in durable, reusable packaging. Loop is available in Paris, France, the UK, Canada, and the 48 contiguous U.S. states, and is a key step in helping to end the epidemic of waste that is caused by 'single-use' consumption. In 2021, Loop will become available in Japan and Australia. Tom and TerraCycle have received hundreds of social, environmental and business awards and recognition from a range of organizations including the United Nations, World Economic Forum, Schwab Foundation, Fortune Magazine, Time Magazine and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Tom is the author of four books, “Revolution in a Bottle” (2009), “Outsmart Waste” (2014), “Make Garbage Great” (2015) and “The Future of Packaging” (2019). Jo Chidley is a chemist and the Founder of Beauty Kitchen UK Ltd, a company on a mission to create the most sustainable beauty products in the world. Widely regarded as one of the pioneers of sustainable beauty, Jo is driving the beauty industry forward with better practise approaches, always. She is Beauty Kitchen’s toughest critic, inspecting everything from the efficacy of the products, to the way the ingredients are sourced, right down to the packaging sustainability for each product. Sustainability in packaging is a subject that is close to her heart and inspired Beauty Kitchen’s RETURN • REFILL • REPEAT programme. Jo has won industry awards, including the ‘Who’s Who in Natural Beauty’ and business awards such as ‘Scale Up Entrepreneur of the Year’. The Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute is dedicated to powering innovation for the circular economy through products that have a positive impact on people and planet. Christina Raab is the Vice President, Strategy & Development at the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, where she is responsible for the growth, innovation, and impact initiatives of the Institute worldwide. In this role, Christina also leads strategic partnerships and stakeholder engagement across key industries and sectors, including cosmetics, personal care and packaging. Before joining the Institute Christina held management positions in global multi-stakeholder organizations and advisory firms at the forefront of holistic sustainability services. She has worked with private companies and public sector institutions to advance the integration of sustainability and circularity in core business practices and to drive sustainable innovation across the value chain. Christina started her professional journey at the environmental branch of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation and holds a PhD in materials chemistry.

Barbara Olioso, PhD, MRSC

Dr Barbara Olioso is a doctor of chemistry, a cosmetic formulator, a speaker and a writer. Her passion is in green chemistry applied to cosmetic products to drive sustainable innovation. She has been specialising in green cosmetics development since 1999. In 2005 she was behind the launch of the first certified organic eau de toilette with Primavera Aromatherapy, now Espa International. Barbara moderates the Sustainability Corner at In Cosmetics Global and has just launched her first handbook on Cosmetic Preservation using green chemistry ingredients. In 2020 she was shortlisted in the Who is Who in Natural Beauty. She is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the UK SCS, the US SCC and Water Europe
