Even with treatment protocols and a high level of national focus, sepsis continues to be the leading cause of death in hospitals in the United States. Research shows that 80 percent of sepsis deaths could be prevented with rapid diagnosis and treatment. With this in mind, 70 member hospitals committed to improving their patient care joined the Vizient Early Recognition and Intervention for Sepsis Management Collaborative. This program will examine how collaborative participants reduced their total sepsis mortality rate and sustained achievements.

Sepsis Program Manager

Summer Gupta, RN, MSN is the Sepsis Program Manager for UCLA Health. UCLA takes an interdisciplinary, patient centered approach to reducing sepsis throughout the system. Summer is responsible for the development and maintenance of their strategic plan, project trackers, and improvement dashboards focusing on sepsis. This requires collaboration with all members of the health care team during the planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluation of care delivery for sepsis patients. Summer partners with executive sponsors, the business owner, and ValU design analysts to carry out the strategic initiatives, coordinate and maintain communication with the workgroup leads, and support multiple integration of opportunities. Summer also acts as the liaison to external collaboratives, such as Vizient, to promote national standards and integrate UCLA into the community of hospitals and consortiums nationally.

Russell Kerbel MD MBA is an Academic Hospitalist and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA Health. Since 2015, he has served as the lead Sepsis Physician Champion for the UCLA Health System. Dr. Kerbel also advises physicians on Clinical Documentation Improvement and participates in numerous committees for Early Clinical Deterioration and Rapid Response. He is the Quality Improvement Editor for Healthcare: The Journal of Healthcare Delivery Science and Innovation.

Elizabeth Harris, RN, MBA, CHDA currently serves as Collaborative Advisor, which develops, manages and delivers a substantive set of collaborative programs to member hospitals, clinics and practices. She has over 20 years of consulting experience with Vizient, responsible for assessment and facilitation of operational and clinical initiatives with emphasis on acute care patient throughput. She has been involved with numerous CQI initiatives and cost efficiency projects in hospitals throughout the country. She has expertise in Project Management with focus of Lean Six Sigma methodology and is a Certified Health Data Analyst through AHIMA.
