Roy Smythe

Chief Executive Officer


Roy Smythe, M.D., joined SomaLogic in November 2018 as Chief Executive Officer. During the course of his career, Dr. Smythe has been an internationally recognized surgeon, biomedical scientist, academician, health system administrator and healthcare business entrepreneur. While in medical school at Texas A&M, he was a Charles A. Dana Foundation Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and the Wharton School of Business. Following medical school, he trained in general surgery, surgical oncology and thoracic surgery and completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in molecular therapeutics at the University of Pennsylvania. His medical and translational research career then began at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he was the recipient of NIH and numerous other funding awards. He subsequently chaired the Department of Surgery at Baylor Scott & White Health System and the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine, where he was the Roney Endowed Chair, and later became the Medical Director of Innovation and Executive Vice President for Institute Development before moving into expanded roles in corporate healthcare. Dr. Smythe came to SomaLogic from Royal Philips, where he served as Global Chief Medical Officer for Strategy and Partnerships. Before joining Philips, he served as Chief Medical Officer at Valence Health, a Chicago-based healthcare company. He held the same title previously at AVIA, a healthcare technology accelerator. A highly sought-after lecturer and the author of more than 300 papers, abstracts and essays in academic, literary and humanities publications, Dr. Smythe is also currently a member of more than 20 U.S. national learned societies.

Shaun Blakeman



Shaun Blakeman joined SomaLogic in 2021 as Chief Financial Officer. He is a financial executive with over 20 years of professional experience spanning operations, logistics, project management, and accounting and financial leadership. Most recently, Mr. Blakeman served as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Cantel Medical, a public company focused on global infection prevention and control in the endoscopy, hemodialysis water and dental spaces. He has also served as a Senior Finance Director at Medtronic, a leader in medical technology, where he oversaw finance for multiple manufacturing sites in Medtronic’s Restorative Therapies Group. Before that, he was the Vice President of Finance for Cantel, where he was the segment CFO for the company’s $500 million endoscopy platform. Prior to his time at Cantel, Mr. Blakeman spent five years with IDEX in financial leadership positions of increasing responsibility, up to the Vice President of Finance for the company’s diaphragm and dosing pump and water platforms. Prior to IDEX, Mr. Blakeman worked for Eaton in various finance positions. He began his career as an officer in the United States Navy in both Surface Warfare and Engineering Duty specialties. Mr. Blakeman received his Bachelor of Science in economics from the University of Minnesota, his Master of Science in applied physics from the Naval Postgraduate School, and his Master of Business Administration from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business.

Melody Harris

President and Chief Operating Officer


Melody Harris serves as SomaLogic President and Chief Operating Officer. She oversees product management, commercialization branding and marketing, commercial sales, IT, data protection and information security, legal, regulatory and quality, and human resources. She previously served as SomaLogic Chief Legal Officer from April 2018 through March 2019. Prior to SomaLogic, Ms. Harris was Vice President and Chief Counsel of Qualcomm Life, a digital health subsidiary of Qualcomm, where she led global and strategic deals with companies such as Novartis, Philips, Abbvie, United Healthcare, Walgreens and WebMD. She also served as a key leader in the diligence, negotiation and integration efforts around Qualcomm Life’s mergers and acquisitions strategy. Ms. Harris joined Qualcomm Life with the acquisition of HealthyCircles (a technology spin-out from Microsoft HealthVault), where she served as general counsel. At HealthyCircles, she led deals with numerous entities across the healthcare spectrum including Merck, Telus Health Solutions, Surescripts, CVS and the American Heart Association. In addition to her legal and regulatory duties, she worked closely with product management and advised on early-stage product related to data and privacy by design. She led HealthyCircles’ successful exit transaction to Qualcomm Life. Prior to HealthyCircles, Ms. Harris held a variety of executive leadership roles, including president of an international consumer-focused brand management firm, and executive vice president and general counsel of an international software development and consulting firm in the broadcasting space. Ms. Harris has served in multiple community and public roles including as a trustee of Metropolitan State University of Denver (gubernatorial appointment), director of the Stapleton Development Corporation (mayoral appointment), member of two Colorado gubernatorial transition committees, policy advisor to Denver Mayor Michael Hancock and member of his transition team, and energy policy advisor and lead writer of the Bill Ritter for Governor campaign’s New Energy Economy white paper in 2006. Ms. Harris holds a Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in Political Science from the University of Denver and a Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the Harvard Law School.

Stephen Williams

Chief Medical Officer


Steve Williams joined SomaLogic in 2009 as Chief Medical Officer responsible for the development of the SomaScan® Platform. Prior to SomaLogic, Dr. Williams co-founded the pharma consultancy Decisionability, LLC in 2007 and authored the book Decisionability: The Skill to Make Your Decisions Productive, Practical and Painless. From 1989-2007, he worked at Pfizer, Inc., initially in the Experimental Medicine Group working in exploratory clinical development and later as Vice President and Worldwide Head of Clinical Technology. From 2003-2007, he was on the National Advisory Council for Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering at the National Institutes of Health. He helped to launch the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging (ADNI) study and help to form the FDA-FNIH-PhRMA biomarker consortium, serving on the inaugural executive committee. He led or co-led the PhRMA position papers on “proof of concept,” surrogate endpoints and evidentiary standards for biomarkers and diagnostics. Dr. Williams has degrees in physiology, medicine and surgery, and a doctorate in medicine and physiology from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School (now a part of Imperial College, London). He also obtained training in diagnostic imaging at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne.
