How has a 50-year-old code set that is maintained by a rigorous, transparent and open process kept pace with a public health emergency, while paving the way for payment & tracking of the administration of the vaccines developed in response?
Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) codes are part of an accepted code set standard and common language used throughout the medical profession. While we have seen the CPT codes for COVID-19 vaccines released quickly to address the urgent demands of the pandemic, there is a substantial amount of coordination that has been unique to this group of codes.
You may know that the American Medical Association (AMA), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and others have collaborated to develop the codes now in use. What may surprise you is that other coding nomenclatures (NDCs, CVX codes) also factor into use of CPT codes, furthering the impact of the CPT code set for improved tracking, reporting and analysis to support data-driven planning.
Join Leslie Prellwitz, MBA, CCS, CCS-P, director of CPT Content Management & Development at the AMA and Jen Layden, MD, PhD, deputy director of the Office of Science at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as they explain how developing codes for COVID-19 vaccines has impacted the broader CPT code development processes and how the CPT code set can help you keep pace with the latest medical care available to patients.
