Abstract:

Amazon has changed consumer expectations. One or two-day shipping is no longer a luxury, it is now crucial to winning and keeping customers. How are retailers without Amazon’s 90+ North American warehouses supposed to compete? How can wholesale distributors keep up with ever-increasing expectations? And more specifically, how do these new consumer requirements change distribution network design and management? The answers to these questions require rethinking the nature of distribution networks and the traditionally static warehouses that define them.

 

This webcast will address these questions and challenges, and will examine the economics of emerging dynamic warehouse strategies that are starting to change the way logistics professionals think about creating competitive advantage through their distribution capabilities.

Karl is a seasoned technology executive, with leadership experience in both startups and large, global corporations. Prior to co-founding FLEXE, Karl was CEO of AdReady, a Seattle-based advertising technology company. He is also a founding Board member of EnergySavvy, a SaaS-based solution for energy efficiency management. Previously, Karl was President of Atlas at aQuantive, before its $6B acquisition by Microsoft, and earlier in his career he was a Manager at Bain & Company in Boston and a Diving Officer in the US Navy.

Steve Johanson

Steve Johanson is an innovator in the area of “sandbox” analytical tools for supply chain decision making.  He founded Starboard Corp. to combine the technologies of gaming simulation and big data analytics.  He has over 20 years of experience assisting supply chain companies achieve real change in the way they operate. Steve's experience includes work with many Fortune 500 companies as well as mid-sized companies experiencing rapid growth.   He authored papers on network optimization, inventory calculation, run strategy planning, and logistics analysis.  He has been asked to speak at APICS, CSCMP, and other industry groups.   Steve has a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy and an M.B.A. from the University of Rochester.  

Amitabh Sinha

Associate Professor of Technology and Operations

Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan

Amitabh Sinha is an Associate Professor of Technology and Operations at the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. He is also the Ford Motor Company Co-Director of the Joel Tauber Institute for Global Operations, which is an interdisciplinary graduate program that trains engineering and business students to solve challenging problems in operations management. He arrived at Ross in 2004, after receiving his Ph.D. in Algorithms, Combinatorics and Optimization from the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University. His current research focuses on the operations of ecommerce/omnichannel retail, about which he also blogs at ecommerceaa.blogspot.com. One of his projects in this area consists of developing algorithms to minimize split shipments for ecommerce fulfillment; another is examining the joint optimization of pricing and fulfillment decisions. His larger research agenda includes various aspects of optimization of operations of supply chains, using analytical modeling.
