Cost and Scalability – Today’s Data Center Conundrum

Date: March 22, 2017
Start Time: 2 PM EST
Duration: 60 minutes, including LIVE Q&A segment

Concerns about over-building and wasting resources, or under-building and losing opportunity, have had significant impact on businesses migrating to colocation facilities or cloud solutions - both very viable options. Join us for a discussion on planning for scalability that will consider enterprise, colocation, and cloud deployments. We'll also discuss practices for analyzing your current data center, understanding its vulnerabilities and preparing it to scale.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe how to perform a facility audit.
  2. Identify the vulnerabilities of a data center and develop a risk profile.
  3. Explore methods to allow scalability while minimizing impact to ongoing operations
  4. Examine various DCIM choices and how each affects the ability to scale.

Principal & Founder

Critical Facilities Solutions, Inc

Bruce Myatt, PE is a registered Mechanical Engineer, founder of Silicon Valley’s Critical Facilities Round Table (CFRT), and CTO and EVP of The Data Centers, LLC in San Francisco. He has over 25 years of engineering consulting experience working with critical facilities such as data centers, clean rooms, semiconductor fabs, nuclear power plants, and DOE’s nuclear weapons production facilities. Bruce is now Executive Editor of Mission Critical Magazine where he also serves as a member of the Technical Advisory Board and writes a data center column, "Zinc Whiskers."

Bruce has recently led the development of advanced data center designs, for which he has been recognized as Finalist in the 2013 Data Center Dynamics NorAm annual awards competition and has twice been selected as a Finalist in eBay’s national design competitions for their Mercury and Quicksilver projects. Previously, he led work for LBNL and PG&E related to data center energy efficiency benchmarking, technology demonstration, new construction and retrofit design assistance, and retro-commissioning. Bruce actively pioneered server cooling solutions including aisles enclosures that segregate air flows and prevent the mixing of chilled and hot air streams in data center environments.

He has been selected as a technical advisor to DOE, EPA, CEC, LBNL, and PG&E Committees focused on Data Center Energy Efficiency, and he has provided data center technical presentations and panel discussions to audiences at several Data Center Dynamics conferences in SF and NYC, National 7x24 Exchange, The Uptime Symposium, Critical Facilities Summit, Next Generation Data Centers, several PG&E Data Center Customer Energy Efficiency conferences, and many other events.
