Abstract:

Recent data has shown the potential of nutrition and management during the first few months of life to influence metabolic programming and, consequently, the future performance of dairy cattle.

We will get the view of dairy nutrition experts on the various pre-weaning feeding strategies that have come to the fore.

We will also hear about insights gleaned from R&D work in the past few years into calf gut health.

SPEAKERS

Dr. Michael Steele

Assistant Professor of Ruminant Nutrition and NSERC Industrial Research Chair

Dr Steele was born and raised on a Holstein dairy farm in South-Western Ontario. He obtained a BSc in Animal Science and a Master Degree in Animal Nutrition at the University of Guelph (2003). He worked as a consultant for one year in the Chinese Dairy Industry (2003-2004) and two years as the head of dairy nutrition for Masterfeeds in Canada (2004-2007). He returned to academics and completed a PhD followed by a one year post-doctoral fellowship - all with Dr. Brian McBride at the University of Guelph (2007-2012.

After his postdoctoral fellowship, he worked for Nutreco Canada Ag-research as Research Scientist for two years (2012-2014) where he supervised undergraduate and graduate students and conducted research in the field of gastrointestinal health and function of the calf and lactating dairy cow.

In September 2014, he started a new position as Assistant Professor of Ruminant Nutrition and currently supervise undergraduate, MSc, PhD, postdoctoral fellows and research technicians. He has established productive collaborations with professors throughout Canada, USA, New Zealand and Europe and published over 40 peer-reviewed publications, 40 conference abstracts and 50 presentations at scientific and, industry meetings in the last five years.

In 2016, Dr. Steele was awarded the Canadian Society of Animal Science Young Scientist Award, the Lallemand Award for Excellence in Dairy Nutrition and an NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Dairy Nutrition and is currently focusing on early-life nutrition and gastrointestinal function and development.

Mogens Vestergaard

My research area and research activities include: Nutrition, health, endocrinology and growth hysiology of cattle (new-born calves, weaned calves, pre-pubertal heifers, veal calves, young bulls, steers, and cows). I also study various types of production systems for growing cattle, including both conventional and organic systems.

In relation to the animal health-related subjects, I specifically study rumen wall characteristics and liver abscesses. In relation to endocrinology and growth, we can quantify hormones and metabolites in blood and tissues and measure tissue accretion rates. Gene-expression and proteomics are tools used. Many studies include assessment of slaughter-, carcass- and meat quality of cattle.

I collaborate with scientist in other AU departments, i.e., Molecular Biology and Genetics, Agro-cology, and Food Science.
Furthermore, I have a large international network in Europe and USA.
I teach at Science and Tecnology at Aarhus University where I am course-responsible for Comparative Anatomy and Physiology, but I also teach at other BSc-, MSc- and PhD-courses. Finally, I teach and act as external examinor at University of Copenhagen.
In the Department of Animal Science I lead the research group Integrative Physiology.

Research projects, supervision of 6 PhD and several MSc students; 30% teaching activities. Editorship ANIMAL, various committees. Specialized in mathematical modelling, digesta kinetics and metabolism studies in pigs and veal calves.
