Microbiota Shift and Health – Infancy to Elderly

Abstract:

There are many aspects of gastrointestinal (GI) health that attribute to overall health. During the stages of life from infancy to elderly, microbiota changes can determine health and happiness, including digestive health, immune response, and even mood. In this presentation, we present an overview of research that demonstrates a positive benefit in establishing a better microbiota through both HMO and probiotic intervention. The presentation highlights the role of GI microbiota in producing beneficial metabolites, resulting in specific health benefits throughout various stages of life.

Amy earned a doctorate degree in Microbiology from Louisiana State University in 1997, minoring in virology and molecular biology. After years conducting research on microbial pathogenesis and developing molecular detection methods, Amy began a career with DuPont in food safety diagnostics. In 2012, Amy moved within DuPont Regulatory Affairs and today is the Regulatory Global Lead for the DuPont Probiotics business. Amy’s ability to understand science and regulation, translating to real world industry, enables her to contribute to the forward-thinking probiotics industry platform and lend to the success of DuPont probiotics, all at the current pace of immense industry growth.

Cyndy is a Regional Director, Regulatory & Scientific Affairs, Asia Pacific at DuPont Nutrition & Health. She leads the team in Australia/New Zealand, India, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia. Her expertise is in the area of nutrition labelling and health claims. She is an accredited nutritionist and has 15 years of experience in the food regulations arena, having worked at International Life Sciences Institute Southeast Asia Region, National Starch Food Innovation, Fonterra, Danone and Kraft Foods. She contributes to the food industry committees and is an Associate Member of the Southeast Asia Public Health Nutrition network. In guiding science-based policy making, she researches on health communication in the area of consumer understanding of nutrition labelling, claims and impact on health change behaviour. She is a doctorate candidate at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and ACI Associate Fellow, Institute on Asian Consumer Insight. Her work is presented at international health marketing and communication conferences and published in the Journal of Nutrition and Education Behaviour.

Dr. Anders Henriksson

Principal Application Specialist

Anders is a Principal Application Specialist at DuPont Nutrition & Health in Australia, from where he is supporting DuPont products and research projects in the area of Dairy, Health and Nutrition throughout the Asia Pacific region including India. Anders graduated with a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden in 1993. He proceeded with post-doctoral research at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, in the field of gastrointestinal microbiology, probiotics and prebiotics.

Anders joined Danisco in 2008, as a Senior Scientist based in Singapore, where he led several development projects related to culture formulations for dairy and dietary supplement products. Prior to that, Anders has held positions as scientist and senior scientist with a major international food ingredients organization, based in Australia, where he was involved in culture development and pre-clinical and clinical studies on probiotics and prebiotics.
