Duration:60 minutes

For decades our power supply has been produced in large power plants, with energy reaching consumers via the grid. However, in the new energy world, where more power comes from renewable sources, this concept is being pushed to its limits – literally.

As we transition to using more sustainable energy sources, the way we generate, consume and store energy is changing. Decentralization and digitization of the grid is becoming the new reality as energy moves from the center of the grid to the edge. Grid edge – where smart buildings meet smart grids – is an area where there are opportunities for growth. What new technologies will bring together the consumer, “prosumer” (a consumer and producer of a product) and the intelligent grid? How can digitization enable a new way for energy production, storage and consumption to work together seamlessly? As new entrants come into the space, what opportunities and challenges lie ahead for traditional power companies? And how will regulation evolve over the coming decades?

Greg Jackson

Octopus Energy

Greg is an experienced digital entrepreneur, passionate about making the green energy revolution affordable through technology. He’s founded a number of successful businesses, including e-commerce company C360, built HomeServe’s innovation business and is an angel investor in a wide range of tech start-ups. He also served as Director of several innovative businesses, including Zopa, the world’s first peer to peer lender, which has now lent almost £2bn fairly and responsibly whilst generating excellent interest rates for lenders. Greg founded Octopus Energy in 2015. It uses technology to be highly efficient – empowering customers with a full digital experience, and then using the same systems to provide the highest standards of support to its customers by phone, email and chat. This technology allows Octopus to challenge normal energy models, bringing transparent, low pricing to new and loyal customers. Octopus is a recognised innovator, delivering time-of-use tariffs at scale, driving EV adoption and helping make the smart grid a reality. In the UK, Octopus now stands at 1.7 million customers, growing by 2500-3000 per day, and is the only energy supplier recommended by consumer champions Which?, for three years in a row. Following significant investment from Origin Energy in May 2020, Octopus became a tech unicorn valued at well over £1 billion. With operations in the US, Germany and Australia, Octopus expects to expand its platform into many more markets over the next few years.

Mark Wilson

ILI Group

Mark has been focused on the renewable energy sector since 2008. From an original target of 100 consents, Mark led the Intelligent Land team in achieving 96 successful planning applications for onshore wind turbine projects. On this journey he could see the growing necessity for a solution to help balance the many gigawatts of intermittent generation that has been coming on stream in the UK and therefore the transition into energy storage. For Mark, this has allowed him to build on his renewable generation experience to help create a long-lasting sustainable solution for a greener, stable electricity grid. We are working on 3 Pumped Storage Hydro projects in Scotland with approx 2GW of capacity and over 450MW of commercial scale battery

Michael Kenefick

Michael is an analyst on the Decentralized Energy team at BloombergNEF. The team researches the changes to our energy system due to technologies such as small-scale generation, battery storage and virtual power plants. Michael’s work focuses on companies’ business models and strategies under this new paradigm. He tracks companies’ activity and investments in new energy technologies, such as virtual power plants, and the new ways companies sell energy to customers, such as “energy-as-a-service”. Michael has a background in building services and sustainable energy consultancy. He holds an MSc in Sustainable Energy Futures from Imperial College and a BEng in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
