PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Influenza places a substantial burden on children and adolescents each season, resulting in high numbers of preventable illnesses, hospitalizations and deaths. Historically, a large majority of pediatric morbidity and mortality occurred in children who were not vaccinated against influenza.¹ The COVID-19 pandemic and the possible threat of a long and severe influenza season elevates the critical need to vaccinate against influenza.

Strong recommendations from healthcare providers supported by public health efforts are needed to improve vaccination rates and reverse the steady trend of low vaccination coverage. What new solutions can be used to overcome vaccination barriers and reduce influenza burden in our youth? Expert speakers will share effective strategies and implementation techniques that can positively impact influenza immunization rates.

This program was originally scheduled to be presented as an educational dinner program during the 49th National Immunization Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Participants of this webcast will learn about new and engaging tools to improve communication and reduce vaccine hesitancy. These solutions will help professionals set new immunization goals and more efficiently, effectively and confidently communicate the benefits of annual influenza vaccination for children and adolescents.

Audrey M. Stevenson, PhD, MPH, MSN, FNP-BC

Audrey M. Stevenson, PhD, MPH, MSN, FNP-BC, is Division Director of Family Health Services for the Salt Lake County Health Department in Salt Lake City, Utah. She manages six public health centers and a variety of initiatives, including the immunization program; the Women, Infants, and Children nutrition program; clinical collaborations; cancer screening programs; public health nursing; and the nurse-family partnership. Dr. Stevenson earned her masters’ degrees in nursing and public health at the University of Utah, in Salt Lake City, where she went on to earn a doctorate in public health. Dr. Stevenson has worked in public health for the past 33 years and as a family nurse practitioner in a number of inpatient and ambulatory settings. She has also served as a nurse consultant to the Salt Lake City school district and is a faculty member of two universities. Dr. Stevenson has published articles and spoken at national and international conferences on topics affecting school nurses, advanced practice nurses, and other medical and pharmacy providers. Dr. Stevenson has been recognized for her work multiple times. She received an American Nurses Association Immunity Award and was also the recipient of the Beatty Award, which is the most distinguished award given by the Utah Public Health Association (UPHA).

Todd H. Wolynn MD, MMM, IBCLC

Todd H. Wolynn, MD, MMM, IBCLC, Pediatrician, Lactation Consultant and CEO of Kids Plus Pediatrics (KPP) & the Breastfeeding Center of Pittsburgh, in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. KPP is a Level 3 NCQA Patient-Centered Medical Home and an independent pediatric practice with three locations.

Dr. Wolynn received his Medical Degree from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine in Pennsylvania and earned a Master of Medical Management from Heinz College, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He led clinical vaccine research at his practice over a span of 14 years including 40+ studies as both a sub-investigator and a principal investigator.

His areas of focus for the past decade have focused on Immunization Communication, Primary Care Breastfeeding Support, Patient/Family Engagement in-the-Office & Online, and Pediatricians as Advocates. Dr. Wolynn has served in a variety of roles as consultant and advisor on Vaccine-related projects in his practice, with professional medical organizations and with vaccine manufacturers and vaccine-related entities.

After KPP sustained a coordinated global social media anti-vaccine attack in October 2017, Dr. Wolynn and KPP have taken a leading role in addressing the anti-vaccine movement, its tactics & impact and has developed strategies to address the negative impact the anti-vaccine movement has on public health. KPP is creating a Social Media Strategy Guide and Anti-Vaccine Combat Toolkit, a pro-Vaccine vetted, private, rapid-response social media rescue network call “Shots Heard Round the World” and strives to increase awareness of the impact of these attacks on removing Health Care Providers vaccine-advocacy voices to the media, legislators and directly to the social media platforms.
