Joe Alcock, MD MSCR

Joe Alcock MD MSCR is a professor of emergency medicine at the University of New Mexico, where he completed his residency and post graduate training in clinical research after receiving his medical degree from UCLA. In addition to his clinical practice at the busiest level 1 trauma center in New Mexico, Dr. Alcock teaches evolutionary biology to undergraduates and medical students and pursues research on the effects of stress and circadian disruption on the microbiome. His current research interests include the effects of night shift work on the oral microbiome of emergency physicians.

Monika Fleshner, PhD

Professor of Integrative Physiology

University of Colorado

Monika Fleshner, PhD is a professor in the Department of Integrative Physiology, a member of the Center for Neuroscience, the director of the Stress Physiology laboratory, at the University of Colorado-Boulder. Her integrative research program focuses on understanding 1) the impact of acute and chronic stressor exposure (mental and physical) on behavior, neural, hormonal and immunological function; 2) how such systems interact to affect the whole organism; and 3) the mechanisms of increased stress robustness (resistance/resilience) produced by exercise, prebiotics and cannabis constituents. She has published ~190 peer-reviewed articles and has a GoogleScholar h-index of 81 and 10-index of 181. The National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, and Mead Johnson Nutrition have previously funded her research program. Current funding is provided by the Office of Naval Research and NASA.

Simone Pyle, PhD

Science and Technology Manager - Gut microbiome


Dr Simone Pyle previously worked at GSK in the Human Performance Lab before going on to complete her PhD at University of Reading in the Food & Nutritional Sciences Department working on prebiotics, probiotics and synbiotics. Alongside her PhD she also carried out a Scientific Internship for the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on the Gut Microbiome to raise awareness and educate policy makers to inform future legislation. Simone recently joined Unilever where she works in the Food and Refreshments Category as a Science & Technology Manager focused on the Gut Microbiome.

He obtained a PhD in chemistry from the Queen’s University of Belfast, Northern Ireland, and held post-doctoral research positions in The Netherlands and France before taking the leap into journalism in 2005. His journalism has been recognized by awards from the American Herbal Products Association (2015 Special Award for Journalistic Excellence), and regionally and nationally by the American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE, 2019 and 2020).
