Corrosion and Freeze Protection in Fire Sprinkler Systems

Start Date:4/22/2021

Start Time:1:00 PM CDT

Duration:60 minutes

Abstract:

Corrosion and freezing in fire sprinkler systems are serious threats that compromise the ability to protect life and property. Studies have found that releasing trapped air can help prevent corrosion, and NFPA 13 (2016) now requires air vents on all wet pipe fire sprinkler systems. Code requires auxiliary drains to collect condensation in dry pipe sprinkler systems, but imperfect maintenance often lets these drains freeze and trip the system. This presentation will cover NFPA 13 code requirements regarding air vents and corrosion as well as auxiliary drains. Participants will also gain an understanding of design requirements and current innovations in air vents and auxiliary drains that better manage corrosion and freeze protection.
