Abstract:

We all know that titanium dioxide (TiO₂) quality impacts paint appearance and performance, and that it’s also a key driver in costs. But the effect of TiO₂ on paint cost is more complex than you might think. The growing availability of lower-cost TiO₂ has presented many formulators with a quick way to decrease the upfront expenses when creating a paint. Producers of these bargain pigments offer a seemingly compelling proposition to formulators in the form of lower prices. However, these bargain pigments are not actually a good bargain. Despite the lower upfront prices, using low-quality TiO₂ can actually end up costing formulators more in the long run.

Dr. Michael Diebold is an Inorganic Chemist with degrees from the University of Illinois and Texas A&M. Mike is currently a technical fellow at Chemours, with responsibilities including product and process development, and the study of fundamental properties of TiO2. He has 10 patents and over 20 publications in the coatings field, including Application of Light Scattering to Coatings: A User’s Guide, a book on using TiO2 in paints, and has given plenary lectures on four continents. He was recently awarded the Mattiello lectureship, which is the highest honor of the American Coatings Association, for technical contributions to the chemical industry.
