Ready for Takeoff: Developing Avionics Targeting the DO-178C and FACE™ Technical Standard

Start Date:10/27/2020

Start Time:2:00 PM EDT

Duration:60 minutes

Advanced commercial software is enabling a faster, more effective way to build and test for airworthiness and to conform with industry standards like RTCA DO-178C and Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE™). Model-Based Engineering (MBE) tools and readily available Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) technologies are quickly replacing the traditional and inefficient manual methodologies to win new defense systems business and accelerate RTCA DO-178C software safety certification.

Join Ansys, CoreAVI, RTI, and Wind River as we demonstrate how to use MBE tools and COTS certification solutions to rapidly and reliably create interoperable safety-critical embedded applications, advancing the performance and affordability of next generation avionics.

Together, we will discuss how to:
  • Create robust software that can immediately be ready for RTCA DO-178C and EUROCAE ED-12C DAL A safety certification
  • Deliver software development to conform with to the FACE™ Technical Standard at both the model and generated code levels
  • Streamline development efforts and reduce costs by 50%

Chip Downing

Senior Market Development Director, Aerospace & Defense

Chip Downing is the Senior Market Development Director of Aerospace and Defense at Real-Time Innovations (RTI). In this position he manages RTI’s global aerospace and defense business and helps drive the Open Management Group (OMG) Data Distribution Service (DDS) industry standard into the commercial and military aerospace market with RTI’s Connext DDS software, now used by over 250 global aerospace and defense customers in over 1,000 design wins. Mr. Downing serves as the elected Business Working Group (BWG) Chair of the joint industry/government Open Group Future Airborne Capabilities Environment (FACE™) Consortium. In this role, he is driving standards-based design efficiencies proven in commercial avionics systems, into next generation military avionics systems. For the last five years he has also served as the Chair of the FACE Consortium BWG Outreach Subcommittee, promoting the FACE approach globally. Mr. Downing is a veteran of the embedded systems industry and a pioneer in COTS safety certification for commercial RTOSs. Previously, he was Senior Director of Aerospace & Defense at Wind River Systems where he was responsible for business development for the company’s global A&D markets. During his 14-year Wind River tenure, design wins for certified avionics products grew to more than 500 projects. Mr. Downing has also led sales, marketing, and consulting organizations at Esterel Technologies (now Ansys), Validated Software, OnCore Systems, and Mentor Graphics (now Siemens).

Andre Odermatt

Andre Odermatt is a Technical Marketing Engineer for Real-Time Innovations (RTI). He received his BS in Electrical Engineering from the Lucerne School of Engineering and Architecture, and Diploma of advanced studies in software engineering from the Bern University of Applied Science. Andre has over 20 years of experience in embedded software development and communication software. Prior to RTI, he worked on Telecom protocols at Alcatel where he developed test systems for Asynchronous Transfer mode systems and Trillium Digital Systems where he was responsible for the SS7 product line. Andre is also involved in the FACE consortium where he participates in the IWS working group, and works on multiple integration projects for the TIM and BITS events.

Thierry Le Sergent

Product manager

Thierry Le Sergent got his PhD in computer science from LAAS-CNRS in 1993. He has more than 25 years of experience in the methods and tools development for Software Engineering at Verilog, Telelogic, Esterel Technologies and Ansys as R&D project manager then product manager for the flagship SCADE Suite product. In 2011, he launched the SCADE Architect product line, extending the scope of this SysML tool to the support of Avionics Interfaces, the FACE, the AADL and the AUTOSAR standards.

Lucas Fryzek

Field Application Engineer

Lucas Fryzek has been a software developer with CoreAVI for 4 years and has recently transitioned over to the role of Field Application Engineer (FAE). Lucas has extensive hands-on experience in developing embedded software systems deployable in DO-178C safety critical environments and has worked in tandem with many of CoreAVI’s largest leading customers to deliver safety critical solutions, including those specializing in the division of graphics workloads across multiple CPU cores. Lucas’ experience with OpenGL SC and Vulkan APIs allow him to provide expert technical support and guidance both to CoreAVI’s customers and internal team.

Devon Yablonski

Senior Director, Aerospace & Defense Solutions

Wind River

Devon Yablonski is the Senior Director of A&D Solutions at Wind River Systems, overseeing business development activities, including open standards and partner ecosystem, and developing the A&D market’s product requirements. Prior to Wind River, Devon held several roles including technical product management of Mercury Systems’ safe and secure, embedded processing products. Devon has a Master of Science in Computer & Electrical Engineering degree from Northeastern University and an MBA from Boston College's Carroll School of Management.
