Abstract:
It is well established that nutrition during the first 1000 days of life can have major effects on growth and development. Moreover, this period is characterized by extreme sensitivity to external stimuli such as inadequate nutritional status of the infant which can interfere with the different stages of the developmental process, leading to short and long term health consequences. Lactalis Ingredients, which has been working for more than 15 years on nutrition, proposes to review the literature on how to provide adequate nutrition for optimal infant growth. To do so, we will review the three macronutrients essential for growth: their composition in human milk, their nutritional requirements and how infant formulas attempt to approximate breast milk to meet these nutritional requirements.
