ACGME Institutional Requirements Major Revision Webinar

DESCRIPTION:The ACGME invites designated institutional officials (DIOs), institutional coordinators, and others to attend an optional webinar hosted by the Institutional Review Committee (IRC) chair and vice chair, along with ACGME Sponsoring Institutions staff members, to learn about the proposed changes to the Institutional Requirements and provide an opportunity for the IRC to respond to initial questions. An overview and detailed walkthrough of the proposed Institutional Requirements will provide useful information for any interested individuals and groups, including those who are considering a submission of written feedback to the IRC during the review and comment period. Registration is required for this free ACGME virtual event.
Speakers
Cynthia Kelley, DO, FAAFP DIO and Vice President of Medical Education, IRC Chair Summa Health Dr. Cynthia Kelley has served as the designated institutional official and vice president of medical education at Summa Health since 2015. In her role, she oversees 21 training programs and 280 residents and fellows. An Akron native, Dr. Kelley completed her undergraduate education at Miami (Ohio) University and her medical school training at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she also completed an undergraduate primary care teaching fellowship. It was during the teaching fellowship that Dr. Kelley found her passion for education. She formally joined the Summa family in 2001 as a family medicine resident and stayed on as a faculty member upon her graduation. In 2014, Dr. Kelley completed a health policy fellowship and authored the lead article in the June 2014 issue of the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association, “Impact of the Single Accreditation Agreement on GME Governance and the Physician Workforce.” She went on to publish in the Journal of Graduate Medical Education about the impact that business decisions can have on graduate medical education (GME) and has become a national speaker on this topic. Dr. Kelley is a past president of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, Ohio Chapter. She joined the IRC in July 2020 and currently serves as the IRC chair. Dr. Kelley also serves on the Akron Urban League board. In addition to medical education, Dr. Kelley is passionate about physician wellness and diversity, equity, and inclusion in the US health care system. Her hobbies include walking, writing, and spending time with her husband, Mike, four daughters, and two dogs.
Sandra E. Moore, MD, MS DIO, IRC Vice Chair Atrium Health Navicent Dr. Sandra E. Moore graduated from the University of Maryland Baltimore County with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and African American Studies. She received her medical degree from the University of Maryland Baltimore and completed her pediatric residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center. She completed her Master of Science in Clinical Research at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Moore has been involved in GME leadership her entire career, serving at the program level for 15 years (including seven years as pediatric residency program director) at the Morehouse School of Medicine. She now serves at the institutional level as the DIO for Atrium Health Navicent and the assistant dean for GME at Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, Georgia. She has been heavily involved in GME at the local and national levels, including educational scholarship and publication. Dr. Moore has been on numerous educational committees over the years and is currently vice chair of the IRC.
Elisa Crouse, MD Executive Director, IRC ACGME Dr. Elisa A Crouse is the executive director of the ACGME Institutional Review Committee. She received her MD from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, where she also completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology. Following residency, she served in the United States Air Force at Whiteman Air Force Base, attaining the rank of Major (LtCol Select). While there, she held positions as chief of obstetrics and gynecology, commander of the maternal/child flight, chief of the surgery disaster team, interim chief of hospital services, and interim squadron commander. She received the Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service. Dr. Crouse joined the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology faculty, where she served as the Warren M. Crosby chair of education in obstetrics and gynecology and residency program director from 1998 to 2015. In addition, during this time, she also held positions as division director for general obstetrics and gynecology and medical director of OU Physicians Women’s health. In 2015 she was appointed as associate dean for graduate medical education and DIO, and served in this capacity until her retirement from academic medicine in 2014. She has also held positions with national and state organizations, including the American Medical Association, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the Oklahoma County Medical Society. She served as a member and Region IV chair of the Council on Resident Education in obstetrics and gynecology and as member and vice chair of the IRC. In addition, she has been fortunate to serve as the medical director of the Oklahoma Mothers’ Milk Bank and also as the primate reproductive health consultant for the Oklahoma City Zoo. In her spare time, she continues to learn from her four rescue dogs by participating in agility, rally, scent, and trick training and competition.
Paul Foster Johnson, MFA Vice President, Sponsoring Institutions ACGME As vice president for Sponsoring Institutions, Paul Foster Johnson provides oversight and leadership of ACGME institutional accreditation and recognition; an interdepartmental program for medically underserved areas and populations and graduate medical education; and institutional outreach and collaboration programs and activities. Before arriving at the ACGME, Paul served as associate dean for graduate medical education at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Paul is a past recipient of the ACGME Institutional Coordinator Excellence Award. A poet and editor, Paul holds an undergraduate degree in English from SUNY – College at Geneseo, and a master of fine arts degree in creative writing from Brown University. Paul is currently a PhD candidate in health policy and administration in the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Kevin B. Weiss, MD, MPH Chief Sponsoring Institutions and Clinical Learning Environment Officer ACGME Dr. Kevin Weiss is the chief sponsoring institutions and clinical learning environments officer at the ACGME. He oversees Sponsoring Institutions and the Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) program, and serves as co-chair of the CLER Evaluation Committee. Dr. Weiss came to the ACGME from the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), where from 2007 to 2012 he served as president and CEO. Under Dr. Weiss’ leadership, ABMS-International was established, with its first international collaboration in Singapore. Dr. Weiss has devoted his medical career to issues of health care quality, equity, and access to care, and enhancing training experiences for physicians and other providers in health care improvement. Since the 1990s, Dr. Weiss has conducted US and international epidemiological and health services research projects related to guideline implementation, chronic care management, outcomes measurement, quality improvement, and health care equity. Dr. Weiss served as a member of the Board of Regents for the American College of Physicians, and as a member of the Board of Directors for both ABMS and the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates. Dr. Weiss completed his clinical training in internal medicine at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. He has a master’s degree in public health from the University of Illinois School of Public Health and a master’s degree in health services administration from Harvard University School of Public Health. He completed his post-doctoral fellowship in epidemiology at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics. Dr. Weiss is certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He also serves as a professor of medicine at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University.
