Abstract:


This course will provide an overview of domestic hot water design issues. Topics covered will include hot water fixtures; demand in GPM, GPH or fixture units for various buildings and number of occupants; water heater sizing (instantaneous vs. storage); temperature controls such as thermostatic mixing valves; pipe routing to minimize dead legs; hot water temperature maintenance (pumps and heating cables); and hot water velocity/pipe sizing. The course will also discuss the maximum and minimum temperature requirements per ASHRAE 188 for scalding and bacterial growth (Legionella) issues, as well as the importance of system maintenance to prevent such issues.

Attendees will be able to earn 2.0 LU | HSWs through the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and 0.2 CEUs through the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) and the International Code Council (ICC).

Learning Objectives:
•Learn how to properly size water heaters and determine the amount of hot water required for various building types
•Learn about the different types of temperature controls in domestic hot water systems
•Learn how to maintain hot water temperatures throughout the system with proper circulating pumps and balancing valves
•Learn the maximum velocities for hot water distribution piping to prevent erosion
•Learn the maximum and minimum temperature requirements and maintenance practices to prevent scalding and Legionella growth
