Abstract:
Biological ageing provides a framework for understanding ageing-related physiological changes beyond chronological age alone and their relevance to healthy ageing. The composition and function of the human gut microbiota also change with age, and accumulating evidence suggests that these changes are associated with healthy ageing. Changes in the gut microbiota may be linked to several of the 12 interconnected hallmarks of ageing, including dysbiosis and chronic inflammation. Age-associated dysbiosis may impair gut homeostasis and has been associated with age-related physiological alterations, including systemic inflammation. Within this context, bifidobacteria have been extensively studied for their potential roles in gut homeostasis and human health. For more than 50 years, Morinaga Milk Industry has conducted research on Human-Residential Bifidobacteria (HRB), a group of bifidobacteria adapted to the human intestinal environment, to characterize their physiological functions and potential health benefits. In this webinar, we will present recent findings from a lifestyle intervention incorporating Bifidobacterium longum BB536, an HRB strain, evaluated using DNA methylation-based biomarkers designed to estimate biological age and the pace of ageing. We will also discuss the potential role of bifidobacteria in healthy ageing, with a particular focus on the modulation of inflammatory responses.
