Mark Anthony Fields, MPH, PhD
Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Science
Yale University School of Medicine
Dr. Mark Fields is a clinical research scientist with expertise in ophthalmology, specifically age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and other inherited retinal degenerations. Dr. Fields earned his PhD in Cellular Biology and Anatomy at the Medical College of Georgia, investigating the immune mechanisms of viral retinitis. His work, in the laboratory of Dr. Sally Atherton, focused on the etiology of acute retinal necrosis (ARN). He completed his postdoctoral work at the Edward Harkness Eye Institute, Department of Ophthalmology at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons, investigating the use of stem cell therapy to treat degenerative diseases of the eye. Dr. Fields is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at the Yale School of Medicine. At Yale, Dr. Fields has established disease models using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) to investigate disease pathology associated with AMD. He has been able to recruit over 35 patients with retinal degenerative eye disorders into a preclinical study investigating the pathology of retinal degenerative disorders including AMD. Dr. Fields has won numerous awards and presented his research at national and local meetings including the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. He has served as an external reviewer for journals such as The Journal of Ocular Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Stem Cell Translational Medicine, and The Journal of Retinal and Vitreous Diseases (Retina). He has received grants from the National Institutes of Health, National Eye Institute, and the Alonzo Family Fund.
