Janet Nodar is Senior Editor for Project and Heavy-Lift at the JOC, covering breakbulk, project and heavy-lift transport. She is based on the U.S. Gulf coast. She was a reporter and editor for the Journal of Commerce's Gulf Shipper and Breakbulk publications from 2006-2013. From 2013-2018 she was Content Director with Breakbulk Events & Media. She holds degrees in finance and English.
Sara Johnson Executive Director of Global Economics IHS Markit Ms. Sara Johnson is executive director of Global Economics in the Economics and Country Risk business unit at IHS Markit. In this role, she helps clients assess worldwide business and financial opportunities and risks. Ms. Johnson co-authors the Global Executive Summary, manages the Executive Strategy Council, and presents the Economic Outlook to international conferences. She previously served as North American research director and chief regional economist with Standard & Poor's DRI, and managing director of Global Macroeconomics with Global Insight, predecessors of IHS Economics & Country Risk that is now part of IHS Markit. Ms. Johnson is a former director of the National Association for Business Economics and the NABE Foundation and was named an NABE Fellow in 2014. She is an officer of The Boston Economic Club and a member of the American Economic Association. Ms. Johnson holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Mathematics from Wellesley College, US, and earned her Master of Arts in Economics from Harvard University, Cambridge, US, with concentrations in Finance and Macroeconomic Theory.
Kathy Canaan Global Director Trade Compliance Fluor Corporation Kathy Canaan, a Fluor Fellow, serves Fluor as Global Director Trade Compliance responsible for planning, directing and managing the company’s international trade compliance program. In prior roles at Fluor, Canaan had responsibility for global functional leadership of Fluor's logistics personnel as well as project logistics leadership and strategic sourcing roles. Before joining Fluor in 2001, Canaan was a project logistics manager in Houston, Texas.

Jim Burkhard Vice President & Head of research for oil markets, energy & mobility IHS Markit Jim is recognized as one of the world’s top analysts on global oil markets and on the future of energy and transportation. He is responsible for the development and coordination of IHS Markit research for global and regional oil markets and scenarios. His expertise covers geopolitics, industry dynamics, and global oil demand and supply trends. Jim also leads research into how changes in the automotive ecosystem are impacting the future of the energy, automotive, and chemical industries.
Jim has led the development of each generation of IHS Markit scenarios that bring together the entirety of IHS Markit energy research to form an integrated global outlook for the future of energy. Jim has testified before the US Congress on energy issues and has served on two US National Petroleum Council (NPC) studies that provide policy recommendations to the US Secretary of Energy.
Susan Oatway Senior Analyst Drewry Susan Oatway joined Drewry in 1997 after spending eight years in senior planning and commercial roles with P&O Bulk Shipping. With Drewry, she has gained extensive experience in working for customers in the marine field, including shipping companies, financial institutions and other institutional clients or advisors. This work covers a wide spectrum, including market studies, valuations and strategic planning. Oatway is the Head of Drewry’s Multipurpose Shipping practice. She provides advice to other team members on all aspects of dry bulk shipping. Oatway holds a B.Sc. in combined sciences, is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers as well as, currently, its international vice chairman. The Drewry group is formed of specialist research brand Drewry Maritime Research, two advisory brands Drewry Maritime Advisors and Drewry Supply Chain Advisors, and investment research brand Drewry Maritime Equity Research. Yorck Niclas Prehm Head of Research Toepfer Transport Yorck Niclas Prehm is a dedicated Multipurpose and Heavylift shipping enthusiast. In his almost 20 years career in the business he held various positions in Chartering, Tonnage Procurement, Project Management and Market analysis with leading market players like Rickmers Group, Intermarine and Arkon Shipping and Projects. In April 2019 he joined Toepfer Transport GmbH as Head of Research and took over the responsibility for the quarterly Toepfer Transport Multipurpose Shipping Report, the Toepfer Multipurpose Index, asset valuations and bespoke research products.
Toepfer Transport GmbH is a long-established Hamburg based boutique ship broker with branch offices in Shanghai and Singapore. Elizabeth Lowe Counsel, International Trade and Logistics Group Venable Liz Lowe is Counsel in the International Trade and Logistics Group at Venable LLP. Liz focuses on international trade and customs, and maritime/transportation and shipping issues. Liz counsels U.S. and non-U.S. companies on a variety of cross-border regulatory and policy matters, transportation and logistics matters, and import/export compliance matters. Her work includes internal compliance reviews and investigations, due diligence activities, voluntary self-disclosures, responses to inquiries from federal agencies, compliance training, licensing, and transportation and logistics contract review. Liz recognizes the need to understand business priorities and to provide practical compliance solutions.
Edwin Bastian Director Global Sales BBC Chartering USA, LLC Edwin Bastian joined BBC Chartering in August 0f 2007. He currently serves as Global Sales Director and leads the strategic sales initiative for the largest global breakbulk and project chartering fleet in the world.
During Ed’s 40+ year career, he has held management positions with following companies, NYK North America, Evergreen Marine, Port of Long Beach, Jones Stevedoring and Nautilus Leasing, UBS and Morgan Stanley.
Ed is an active member of various industry organizations including International Transportation Management Association of Houston, Railway Industrial Clearance Association, Editorial Advisory Board for Breakbulk Magazine, Breakbulk Americas Program Advisory Board and serves on the board of Maritime Workers Emergency Medical Fund, a Texas 501©(3). Ed also is frequently invited as a guest speaker and panelist at trade luncheons and events both inside and outside the Houston area.
John Hark Director, North American Chartering Bertling Logistics John has been in the Houston maritime industry for more than 25 years and graduated from Texas A&M University in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science in Maritime Administration. He started with Bertling in 2002 as Director of North America Vessel Operations. After moving to Bertling’s logistics division, he held various management roles within the North and South America regions. He is currently the Director of Chartering for North America. In addition to his position with Bertling, he has been an Adjunct Professor with Texas A&M University since 2002. Active in industry and education initiatives, John is the current President of the Houston Maritime Arbitrators Association, chairs advisory councils for Lone Star College and Houston Community College and is a board member of the Port Houston Partners in Maritime Education program.
Jeromy Hofmeister Logistics Manager Vogt Power International Jeromy Hofmeister is the Manager of Logistics for Vogt Power International. His experience in construction engineering and supply management equipped him well for the rigors of HRSG logistics. Since 1999, when he earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics, his project portfolio grew in difficulty and complexity, from local home building to construction management for a non-profit in Africa, and later to global supply management with General Electric in 2011. He joined Vogt supply management in 2015, and since 2019 leads the Vogt logistics team. For over 135 years, and in more than 60 countries, Vogt has delivered excellence in Heat Recovery Steam Generators, and continues to blaze the trail for combined-cycle power generation.
STEPHEN SPOLJARIC Corporate Manager, Global Logistics Bechtel Stephen Spoljaric is the Corporate Manager of Global Logistics for Bechtel. In this role, he focuses on a collaborative, integrated, Engineered Logistics™ approach to increase predictability and improve safety. Prior to his current position, Spoljaric served as an area operations manager on a multi-billion-dollar petro-chemicals giga-project in Pennsylvania with oversight of the Union craft labor.
Since joining Bechtel in 2012, Spoljaric’s leadership and forward-thinking ideas have focused on risk mitigation in consideration of cost and schedule. He has built positive client relationships through engagement in problem-solving with the promotion of technology in the Supply Chain.
He is currently on the Executive Board for the Waterways Council, Inc. (WCI), part of the Advisory Board for the University of Houston Supply Chain Logistics Technology school, serves as the Treasurer for the Exporters Competitive Maritime Council (ECMC), and is a member of the Gulf Intercoastal Canal Association and Specialized Carrier & Rigging Association. Previously, he served on the Advisory Board for Penn State University (Beaver) and was a participant on the Scholarship Committee for the Pittsburgh Traffic Club.
Spoljaric has a Bechtel Certification in Logistics and has a Six Sigma Champion Certification. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Fordham University and a master’s degree in industrial engineering from Clemson University. Spoljaric was recently selected as a Bechtel Distinguished Technical Specialist (BDTS).
