Abstract:

Travelers on Highway 6 east of Hastings often ask about the bunkers and buildings that line the road for miles. They are often surprised to learn it is the remains of a World War II Naval Ammunition Depot. Join us for this opportunity to learn more about the construction and operation of the facility in the 1940s, as well as the lasting impact it had on the Hastings region. Hear about farmers who lost their land; learn how businesses coped with demand and worker shortages; see images of civilian works and discover who helped build ammunition in the heartland of Nebraska; and find out how Hastings, Glenville, Harvard, and other towns in the area, adapted to the large influx of people.
