Suromitra Sanatani, LL.B., ICD.D

Acting Chair of the Board of Directors

Suromitra was appointed as Acting Chair of the Board of Directors of Canada Post in July of 2020. She joined the Board in May of 2018. A seasoned corporate director, Suromitra is a board member of Travel Alberta and a member of the Royal Bank Global Asset Management Independent Review Committee. Previously, she served on various boards, including Edmonton International Airport, Victoria International Airport, Social Sciences Humanities Research Council of Canada, Canadian Blood Services, and as chair of the Royal BC Museum. Suromitra began her career in litigation before transitioning from the practice of law to senior corporate positions in the non-profit, public and private sectors. In her role as BC and Yukon Vice President of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, Suromitra represented the interests of small- and medium-sized businesses. Later, as Vice President, Corporate and Government Relations at Partnerships BC, she played a pivotal role in establishing this Crown corporation, which specializes in public-private partnerships. Her subsequent consulting practice included leading First Nations consultations across British Columbia, and providing strategic advice to senior executives in the financial, utilities and transportation sectors. Suromitra is fluent in English, French and German and has a conversational ability in Bengali. She has a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Ottawa and a Bachelor of Arts (French Literature) from the University of Victoria.

Canada Post is the country’s postal service and leading parcel delivery company. In 2018, it delivered 8 billion pieces of mail, parcels and messages to 16.4 million addresses. With its subsidiaries Purolator Inc., SCI Group Inc. and Innovapost Inc., Canada Post is a leader in providing innovative e-commerce, marketing and logistics solutions. As Chief Commercial Officer for Canada Post from August 2016 until his appointment as CEO, Doug led growth strategies for Canada Post’s Parcels, Direct Marketing and Transaction Mail businesses. He oversaw all commercial functions, including Sales, Marketing, Retail, Digital, Business Development and Customer Service. He was also a member of the senior executive team that reviews and approves major business plans, processes and policies, as well as performance indicators and targets. An accomplished senior executive with a strong focus on customer service, Doug has more than 30 years of broad experience in the consumer packaged goods industry. He worked with Canadian and global organizations – leading sales, marketing, and product management. Before joining Canada Post in August 2016, Doug led well-established companies through complex business transformations. He was President and CEO of Scotsburn Dairy Group, the largest Atlantic Canadian-owned dairy processor and distributor. Prior to that, he was the first non-family member to be President and CEO of Ganong Bros. Limited, one of Canada’s oldest family businesses. Previously, he held executive roles with Parmalat, Nestlé and Coca-Cola. Doug also chairs the board of Innovapost. A proud native of Nova Scotia, Doug earned both a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a Masters in Business Administration from Dalhousie University in Halifax.

Susan Margles

Chief People and Safety Officer

In this role, Susan leads all aspects of Human Resources while advancing safety as the company’s top priority. She is also responsible for supporting collaborative efforts with all of our bargaining agents across the company. In her previous role as Senior Vice-President, Corporate Affairs, Susan was responsible for Government and Community Affairs, Compliance and for leading the shift to integrating Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) principles into our corporate priorities. Susan has served as a key advisor to the CEO and Board of Directors, playing a critical role in setting the Corporation's strategic direction through development and approval of the five-year corporate plan, as well as successfully leading the company through several mandate reviews. Susan joined Canada Post in 2005 from the federal government, where she worked in increasingly senior positions in several different departments, including the Department of Finance, Transport Canada, Industry Canada and Health Canada. Throughout her career, Susan has established excellent relationships with multiple stakeholders, bringing together divergent interests on highly sensitive issues. She is known for her strong communication skills and ability to bring complex issues to ground. Susan is a member of the Board of Directors of the Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation, a trustee of the Canada Post Community Foundation and a mentor in the Women’s Executive Network. She is fluently bilingual and holds a Bachelors Degree in Economics and an MBA from McGill University. She is married and is the mother of two.

Wayne Cheeseman

Chief Financial Officer

Since joining Canada Post in 2007 as Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Cheeseman has provided expert advice and counsel to the Board and executive team on matters that support profitable growth, including operational change, business transformation, investment opportunities, customer contracts and strategic planning. Prior to joining Canada Post, Mr. Cheeseman was Chief Financial Officer with the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, where he was responsible for the company's financial operations, risk management initiatives and corporate information technology. He also spent 14 years with Molson Breweries, where he held such important roles as Vice-President, Finance Ontario/West; Vice-President, Strategic and Business Planning; and Vice-President, Finance (Controller). He also held various financial executive roles with Carling O'Keefe Breweries and the Auditor General's Department, Government of Newfoundland. Mr. Cheeseman holds the designation of Chartered Accountant, is a Member of the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) and holds the ICD Director designation. He received Honours Bachelor of Commerce and Master of Business Administration degrees from Memorial University, Newfoundland. After graduating, he went to work with the accounting firm Peat, Marwick and Mitchell. Mr. Cheeseman is married and has two daughters.
