Abstract
In March of 1930, construction began on a project as mega as they come, the Empire State Building. Shortly over a year later, it was finished under budget. Why does this seem so impossible to us today? Through an analysis of more than $1 trillion worth of capital projects over the past five years, McKinsey has uncovered the trend, we simply stopped collaborating well. In other words, there is a direct correlation between increasing productivity and improving basic project management outcomes. Not only does this direction seem to offer the most promise for improving site and operational performance, but also the relationship between owners and the design construction teams themselves. It sounds simple, but the difficulty lies in how we tackle the challenge of productivity—and with what tools? We’ll explore best practices and technology for improving productivity, and how these can help better align the overall interests of capital project owners and contractors alike. In this webinar, topics covered include:
- Enhancing operational efficiencies by improving communication between owners and contractors
- Strengthening scenario planning by involving construction and procurement teams in the design phase
- Leveraging planning tools to improve operational and tactical success
- Optimizing processes with more effective change order management
- Empowering project management teams with the right technology tools at the right time

Theodore J. Weidner, Ph.D. Professor of Engineering Practice, Construction & Engineering Management Purdue University Dr. Weidner is focused on articulating and increasing the awareness of facilities as they contribute to the mission of the organization/ industry they are intended to support. This is accomplished by review of empirical information and identification of linkages and correlation with primary objectives of the organization demonstrating the value of facility maintenance and operational decisions.
He has made a career of developing and leveraging tools that improve communication between the Owner and the design/construction team. These tools have been developed over 30 years of capital construction projects where the majority of occupants had no prior capital construction experience. The tools focused on deriving from occupants the functionality of the end result and on how it would be used, operated, and maintained. The tools were used in pre-design phase, well in advance of engaging the design/construction team with the output used throughout the delivery process to maintain alignment.
The vertical and horizontal infrastructure constructed in the US over the last 100+ years propelled the US to be an economic leader. However, as the infrastructure ages and society demands more efficient and effective use of resources, it is essential that engineers be equipped with the tools to identify and recommend effective infrastructure renovation and recapitalization projects.
Contributions to date have focused on quantifying measures of economic benefit, more work is needed to ensure the measures are both necessary and sufficient for future analysis. Succeeding efforts will be focused on organizing data sources and creating linkages.
