As Granite's Survey Chief, Brandon provides guidance and direction to field crews and surveying technicians. Through his extensive training in aerial mapping, terrestrial scanning,3D modeling software, GPS, and traditional surveying methods, Brandon provides project owners with a clear project understanding and approach.
Brandon creates data-driven QC plans based on field layouts and survey data. He applies his training in 3D Modeling,Machine Control Systems, and GPS survey technology to safely and effectively deliver the projects. He verifies project control survey monuments establishing a site calibration used for design implementation. He is responsible for building and maintaining 3D models used in both mass earthwork and site hardscape layout. He also provides survey QC as required to field layout and survey data.
Brandon contributes technical assistance as required for machine control operations and grade checking personnel. He tracks and maintains all survey equipment and trains personnel in survey, machine control technology and techniques. Brandon develops a drone flight schedule allowing for continual project documentation and design compliance utilizing various survey and photogrammetry software.

34 year civil-technical-IT oriented , non-engineer, career at State of Minnesota Department of Transportation in both civil-technical and IT related work roles. Civil technical work experience in bridge, photogrammetrics and GEOPAK/MicroStation support, construction vendor oversight. Stint in IT as MicroStation CADD Data Standards lead, ProjectWise config/deployment and standards, then transition to AASHTOWare CRL Admin. Returned to the civil side in 2018 as CADD Systems Supervisor overseeing agency ProjectWise and PowerGEOPAK applications –currently involved in agency preparation to use 3D models as project-data containers.
Kris Peterson, PE
Project Development Director
Utah Department of Transportation
Mr. Peterson graduated from Brigham Young University in 1996 with a Masters Degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering with emphasis in Geotechnical Engineering. He joined the Utah Department of Transportation as a Civil Engineer Intern in 1996 and is a native of Lehi, Utah. He has served in the UDOT Region Two area (Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele Counties) as the Engineering Support Services, Traffic Operations and Resident Construction Engineers. In 2007, he was appointed the statewide Director of Construction and Materials where he earned an exceptional reputation for his management and leadership skills.
In January 2011, Mr. Peterson was appointed Director of Region 1 where he was responsible for UDOT’s Planning, Design, Construction, Maintenance and Community Outreach activities in Davis, Weber, Box Elder, Cache, Rich and Morgan Counties.
Most recently, In January of 2019, Kris was appointed to serve as the Project Development Director where he oversees the statewide efforts involving structural, geotechnical roadway, materials and drainage engineering, project delivery, right-of-way purchases, property management and civil rights as well as consultant and construction bidding for UDOT.
Kris is the proud father of 4 children and lives in Kaysville, UT with his wife and family.
