Infection prevention and control: Protecting residents and staff

Residents of long term care facilities are at risk of infections circulating in the community and health care-associated infections. This presentation will review those risks, their significance and how they occur, as well as provide evidence-based infection prevention and control best practices to protect residents. These infection prevention practices include hand hygiene; environmental cleaning and disinfecting; and ensuring designation of multidisciplinary oversight groups to detect, treat, contain and prevent the transmission of potential pathogens. The program will also offer resources to support your efforts toward improving infection control for your residents and staff. 

Learning objectives:

  • Review why infection prevention is so critical for residents in long-term care
  • Assess overall infection prevention and control best practices and clinical-based evidence to protect residents
  • Discuss strategies for infection prevention including multidrug-resistant organisms

Nikki Cracknell, MS, RN. is senior manager of clinical development and a medical science liaison in Medical Affairs at Medline Industries, Inc. She manages a team that functions as a bridge between Medline and healthcare providers. Cracknell holds a master’s degree in physiology. Her career spans over 20 years in healthcare within the clinical setting, as well as in the medical device and pharmaceutical industry, with more than eight years of experience as liaison and clinical educator involving acute and post-acute care and community outreach. She has extensive experience within healthcare-acquired infection prevention, emergency medicine, post-operative pain management, vascular access and physical therapy. Knowledge within these areas further involves clinical research, infectious disease treatment and medical nutritionals; amongst others. She is a member of SHEA (Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America), APIC (Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology), AORN (Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses) and AACN (American Association of Critical Care Nurses) and has a Six Sigma Greenbelt.
