SpeakersLarry Short, CPA, CGA Portfolio Manager, Executive Director, Private Client Group at HollisWealth Larry Short was born and raised in Newfoundland. He was an unlikely candidate to enter the wealth management industry but scholarships, student loans, and hard work brought him to where he is today. Larry graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1981 from Memorial University of Newfoundland and earned his professional accounting designation in 1988.
He became a Portfolio Manager in 2011. Less than 5% of advisors in Canada have been awarded the Portfolio Manager license. This license is the only one in the investment advice industry that carries the fiduciary rule requirement.
Larry has authored two books, the latest of which was In Short: Successful Investing During Turbulent Times. He has also had numerous articles published and been featured on CBC, BBC and the Business News Network on many occasions.
In his 31 year career, Larry has been employed as a Vice President at RBC Dominion Securities and TD Waterhouse. In 2008 he established the firm ShortFinancial, a full service wealth management and financial planning practice with offices in St. John's Newfoundland and Toronto.

Mary Ann Baynton Director of Strategy and Collaboration, Workplace Strategies for Mental Health Canada Life Mary Ann is the author of several books including Mindful Manager, Keeping Well at Work, Preventing Workplace Meltdown, Resolving Workplace Issues, Building Stronger Teams, and The Evolution of Workplace Mental Health in Canada.
As an independent workplace relations specialist, she helps improve or resolve issues for individuals, teams, unions and employers including those involving mental health, psychological safety, conflict or performance concerns.
Mary Ann proudly serves as the Director of Strategy & Collaboration for Workplace Strategies for Mental Health, an initiative of Canada Life which develops and provides free tools and resources for anyone who wishes to prevent, manage or improve psychological health and safety at work.
She has served as co-chair of the Technical Committee for the National Standard of Canada on Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace, a member of the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s Workforce Advisory Committee, and a member of the Employment Standards Committee for the AODA. Mary Ann is also a founder of Mindful Employer Canada and continues as an advisor to this not-for-profit organization.
Mary Ann strives to reduce workplace stress and conflict in order to improve working lives.
Doretta Thompson, CAPA CPA Canada’s director of Corporate Citizenship Doretta is CPA Canada’s director of Corporate Citizenship and the national director of the CPA Martin Mentorship Program for Indigenous High School Students. As CPA Canada’s Financial Literacy Leader, she is responsible for CPA Canada’s social responsibility initiatives, including CPA Canada’s international award-winning Financial Literacy program and programs that support financial literacy and capacity building in Indigenous Communities.
Doretta holds a Certified Aboriginal Professional Administrator (CAPA) designation from AFOA Canada and sits on the AFOA Canada board, as well as on the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada’s Financial Literacy Working Group for Indigenous Peoples. She was a member of the FCAC working group that developed the Government of Canada’s framework for workplace financial literacy and on the Advisory Committee of Excellence Canada’s financial literacy standards. She is a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
