Abstract
The Thursday Town Hall at the 2023 Food Safety Summit will center on a conversation with top regulators and advisory groups about the key issues, updates, and initiatives happening within their organizations. In true town hall fashion, the audience will be invited to participate in a robust Q&A session—moderated by Gillian Kelleher, CEO of Kelleher Consultants LLC and Chair of the Food Safety Summit Educational Advisory Board—with the panelists.
Donald Prater, D.V.M. Acting Director of the Office of Food Policy and Response Food and Drug Administration Donald Prater, D.V.M., is the Acting Director of the Office of Food Policy and Response (OFPR) at FDA and the Associate Commissioner for Imported Food Safety at FDA. He serves as a member of the OFPR's executive leadership team, providing direction and management to all imported food safety programs. In addition, he serves as a senior scientific advisor and technical expert on matters related to human and animal food safety and the implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) to ensure the safety of the U.S. food supply. Dr. Prater also co-leads a core element of FDA's New Era of Smarter Food Safety focused on fostering and supporting food safety culture across the food system. He holds a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine and a B.S. degree in Biology/Biological Sciences and Zoology from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Robert Tauxe, M.D. Director, DFWED, NCEZID, DDID Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Dr. Robert Tauxe is Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division charged with the prevention and control of foodborne, waterborne, and fungal infections. This Division monitors the frequency of these infections in the U.S., investigates outbreaks, and develops strategies to reduce the disease, disability, and deaths that they cause. Dr. Tauxe graduated from Yale University with an M.P.H. degree, and received his medical degree from Vanderbilt Medical School in Nashville, Tennessee. He completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Washington, trained at the CDC in the Epidemic Intelligence Service for two years, and then joined CDC staff in 1985. His faculty appointments include the School of Public Health and the Department of Biology at Emory University, Atlanta.
Sandra Eskin Deputy Under Secretary for Food Safety U.S. Department of Agriculture Sandra Eskin was appointed Deputy Under Secretary for Food Safety on March 16, 2021. In this role, Mrs. Eskin leads the Office of Food Safety at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), overseeing the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), which has regulatory oversight for ensuring that meat, poultry, and egg products are safe, wholesome, and accurately labeled. Prior to joining USDA, Mrs. Eskin was the Project Director for Food Safety at The Pew Charitable Trusts in Washington D.C., a position she held since November 2009. She also served as the Deputy Director of the Produce Safety Project (PSP), a Pew-funded initiative at Georgetown University, from 2008–2009. While at PSP, she was a senior scholar with the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown University.
Steven Mandernach Executive Director Association of Food and Drug Officials (AFDO) Steven Mandernach is the Executive Director for the Association of Food and Drug Officials (AFDO). He has served as the Chair for the Manufactured Food Regulatory Program Alliance. He holds a Juris Doctorate from Drake University Law School and is pursuing an MS degree in Food Safety from Michigan State University.
Gillian Kelleher (Moderator) CEO Kelleher Consultants LLC Gillian Kelleher, President and CEO of Kelleher Consultants LLC, is Chairperson for the Educational Advisory Board (EAB) for the 2023 Food Safety Summit. She brings to the 2023 Food Safety Summit her vast, global leadership experience in the food industry and in food safety and quality, having worked in diverse sectors around the world including manufacturing, foodservice, retail, and distribution. Ms. Kelleher was formerly Vice President of Food Safety and Quality Assurance for Wegmans Food Markets. Prior to her tenure at Wegmans, she also worked at Häagen Dazs, Burger King, Express Foods, and Pillsbury. In addition, she has led the development of food safety and quality programs for many large and small private-label suppliers and distributors. Ms. Kelleher earned her B.S. degree in Dairy and Food Science from University College Cork in Ireland.
