Individuals have struggled with debt far before COVID-19. With the obstacles this pandemic brings, many individuals have found themselves more “stuck” In debt than they were before. This session, presented by Sandy Lyons, CPA, CA, Senior Manager, Licensed Insolvency Trustee at Grant Thornton Limited alongside Stacy Yanchuk Oleksy, Director of Education and Community Awareness at Credit Counselling Society will tackle debt head-on including taking control and assessing debt during this crisis as well as providing options for repayment.

Sandy Lyons

Every day, Sandy Lyons helps Albertans obtain relief from their personal financial difficulties. As a Senior Manager with Grant Thornton Limited, Sandy has over 35 years of experience in assisting consumers and small businesses obtain financial fresh starts.

Sandy is a Chartered Professional Accountant, Chartered Insolvency Restructuring Professional, Certified Fraud Examiner, Licensed Insolvency Trustee and Insolvency Counselor at Grant Thornton Limited’s Consumer Insolvency practice in Southern Alberta. He has spent the last 20 years focused on small, owner-managed business and consumer insolvency.

In his spare time, Sandy likes to support not for profit organizations in his community by fundraising, volunteering and sharing his professional expertise. In the past, Sandy has been a Director and President of the Alberta Association of Insolvency Restructuring Professionals, a Director and Board Chair of the Family Centre Society of Southern Alberta, a Director of the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Canadian Insolvency Foundation, and Junior Achievement of Southern Alberta.

Sandy is currently dedicating his volunteer time to the education of financial literacy. He is an active volunteer with the CPA Canada Financial Literacy program as a presenter and has had appearances in local media such as CTV News Calgary and Global News Calgary discussing the topic.

Stacy Yanchuk Oleksy

Credit Counselling Society

Director, Education and Community Awareness

Stacy is the Director of Education and Community Awareness at the Credit Counselling Society. She has a Master’s degree in Family Ecology, is a professional Coach and a Certified Educator in Personal Finance. Stacy has presented at various conferences in the US and Canada and has served on various expert panels in Canada. She has published articles in Canadian Living and has served as a guest for various media outlets seeking advice on personal money management topics. Stacy has co-written two workbooks and has developed personal finance curriculum for various workshops and webinars.

Chartered Professional Accountants of Prince Edward Island

Tanya O’Brien, CPA, CA has been involved in CPA Canada’s Financial Literacy Program for five years. As CEO of CPA Prince Edward Island, she is responsible for delivery of the program in her province. This includes seeking out community groups, recruiting members as presenters and delivering sessions. She is a strong believer in the benefits of improving the financial literacy skills of Canadians and the work being done to achieve this.
