Abstract:

Individuals have struggled with debt far before COVID-19. With the obstacles this pandemic brings, many individuals have found themselves more “stuck” In debt than they were before. This session, presented by Sandy Lyons, CPA, CA, Senior Manager, Licensed Insolvency Trustee at Grant Thornton Limited alongside Stacy Yanchuk Oleksy, Director of Education and Community Awareness at Credit Counselling Society will tackle debt head-on including taking control and assessing debt during this crisis as well as providing options for repayment.

Every day, Sandy and his team help Canadians obtain relief from their personal and business-related financial difficulties.

As a Licensed Insolvency Trustee and Insolvency Counselor with Grant Thornton Limited in Lethbridge, Alberta, Sandy has more than 37 years of experience in assisting consumers and owner-managed small businesses restructure their finances under the provisions of the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act.

Sandy is a past director and president of the Alberta Association of Insolvency Restructuring Professionals; a past director and board chair of the Family Centre Society of Southern Alberta; and a past director of the Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce, Canadian Insolvency Foundation, and Junior Achievement of Southern Alberta.

Sandy dedicates his spare time to financial literacy and not for profit board governance related initiatives in his local community and is a volunteer with the CPA Canada Financial Literacy program and Speakers Bureau.

Stacy Yanchuk Oleksy

Interim CEO and Director of Education & Community Awareness

Stacy is the interim CEO for Credit Counselling Canada, a national association and accrediting body for the non-profit credit counselling industry in Canada. Stacy will return to her home organization, the Credit Counselling Society, upon completion of the secondment, as the director of Education and Community Awareness. She has a master’s degree in family ecology, and is a professional coach and certified educator in personal finance. Stacy is a passionate and dynamic speaker and facilitator and has over 20 years experience in program development, adult education, and leadership. She has presented at various conferences in Canada and the U.S. and has served on various expert panels. She has a monthly article in Canadian Living, and is called to speak to local, regional, and national media on personal money management. Stacy has co-written two money workbooks and has developed personal finance curriculum for various workshops and webinars. Stacy has served on the CCC Education Committee, Debt Advisory Committee for Consumer Protection BC, and the Advisory Committee for the Vancouver Rent Bank.

Tanya O’Brien, CPA, CA has been involved in CPA Canada’s Financial Literacy Program for five years. As CEO of CPA Prince Edward Island, she is responsible for delivery of the program in her province. This includes seeking out community groups, recruiting members as presenters and delivering sessions. She is a strong believer in the benefits of improving the financial literacy skills of Canadians and the work being done to achieve this.
