Addressing Industry Trends in Water Purification with UVC LEDs

On Demand until September 18, 2019

Duration:60 minutes

Abstract:

Consumer appliances using UVC LEDs like water dispensers, smart faucets, and home beverage systems will begin hitting store shelves in 2019. This can be attributed to recent accomplishments around price, performance, and volume that support the demands of consumer water purification.

Crystal IS will share its insight on how early-mover consumer appliance designers are meeting major consumer design trends using UVC LEDs, along with current market drivers for consumer UV purification associated with design for localization, connected user experiences, and the displacement of bottled water.

  • Applications for water purification using UVC LEDs in consumer appliances
  • Overview of emerging uses for UVC LEDs in consumer appliances
  • Common product engineering challenges when integrating UVC LED-based reactors and how to overcome them

Crystal IS

James Peterson is responsible for the strategic direction of for Crystal IS’ products focused on water markets—Klaran for water disinfection and Optan for water quality sensing. He develops business models for UVC emitters and ensures these product lines meet the specific customer needs in water markets. Prior to Crystal IS, he co-founded Vital Vio, a company that designs, engineers and manufactures LED lighting systems that reduce bacteria and other organisms from at-risk environmental surfaces. James was named to the 2016 Forbes 30 under 30 list and has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York.

Hari Venugopalan

Hari Venugopalan is responsible for identifying emerging markets and applications for UVC LEDs. He works closely with customers to understand their evolving needs and determine how UVC LEDs can help address them. Hari has more than 10 years of experience in marketing and product innovation in several clean technologies including strategic marketing efforts in two cleantech startups in energy efficiency and green chemicals. Prior to that, he was a strategy consultant at IBM, advising Fortune 500 companies on business and operations strategy. Prior to IBM, Hari supported LED lamp technology development for Emcore Corporation’s joint venture with GE Lighting. Hari holds a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Penn State University and a MBA from New York University.

Rajul Randive

Director of Applications Development
Crystal IS

Rajul Randive is responsible for designing, building and testing various prototype applications that use Crystal IS UVC LEDs. He works closely with customers to develop applications and maps those to engineering requirements that result in a market-ready product. He also ensures test protocols meet customer specifications. With more than 20 years experience with UV application development, he is a frequent industry author and presenter. He is also a voting member on the ASHRAE Committee for “Guidelines for the application of ultraviolet germicidal devices to control the transmission of airborne pathogens.”
