Abstract:

African Swine Fever (ASF) is running rife around the world and destroying the international pork industry. China has been one of the countries worst hit by the disease, with every province having at least one reported case of ASF over the past year. This has led to a massive pig cull, up to 200 million pigs according to Rabobank, and skewed pork trade to and from the country. China isn’t the only nation hit by ASF, it has steadily moved across Eastern Europe, with cases reported in Belgium and Bulgaria amongst others. These incidents have led other countries to implement preventative measures such as a wall being built on Polish borders and the US introducing stricter border security. This webinar will examine the extent of the problem, what the impact is on a country confirmed to have ASF, what other countries are doing to protect themselves and what scientific investment is being made to tackle the problem.

Brett Stuart is the president of Global AgriTrends. The firm was organized in 2006 and provides global market research, analysis and forecasting to a variety of clients around the world. He was formerly the economist for the U.S. Meat Export Federation. He has conducted numerous research and analysis projects in the global meat trade area as well as advising government representatives on international trade issues. Mr. Stuart has conducted on-the-ground agriculture industry research for a variety of clients on six continents. Brett was raised on a cattle ranch operating in Utah and Wyoming and has previously worked as a market analyst and controller in the agriculture industry.

He received an undergraduate degree in accounting at Utah State University and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Nebraska. He and his wife Amanda live on a farm near Preston, Idaho with their five children.

Rupert Claxton

Rupert has worked as a strategy consultant in the food sector since joining Gira in 2003, with a high level of specialisation in global meat markets, especially in the developing world. He has a strong understanding of the evolving nature of international meat demand and the supply systems that provide it, as well as their internal organisation.

For the last 14 years Rupert has produced the Asian sector of the annual Gira Meat Club report, and for the last 7 managed the Gira Asian Meat Club. He also helped produce Gira’s 2018 Long Term Global Meat report. In the last year he has been actively researching developments in the global pork supply chain as ASF spreads through key markets and the resultant issues for producers and traders.

Rupert’s other work recently has included; ongoing research on the impact of ASF, African research on beef, poultry and pork, European studies on the beef & sheepmeat industries, processed meat production, meat in retail and global salmon production and trade. Rupert’s personal background in UK farming affords him a balanced outlook on the increasingly globalised meat industry, between the commercial drivers that control the processing industry and the complex cultural heritage that farming has evolved from.

Scott Dee, DVM MS PhD

Scott Dee earned his DVM, MS and PhD from the University of Minnesota. He is a board certified veterinary microbiologist and a past President of the AASV. After working in swine practice for 12 years, Scott was a Professor at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine where he focused his research on the transmission and biosecurity of PRRSV for a 12-year period. In 2011, Scott joined Pipestone Veterinary Services in Pipestone, MN where he currently serves as Director of Pipestone Applied Research (PAR), a business unit which conducts collaborative research efforts with production companies across North America comprising approximately 2.0 million sows. Scott has been awarded > 9.8M in research funds, has published 148 papers in peer reviewed journals (including the initial publication providing proof of concept of PEDV transmission in feed) and is currently studying the transboundary risk of pathogen spread through feed ingredients with emphasis on ASFV. He has received the AASV Practitioner of the Year award, the Leman Science in Practice award, the AASV Howard Dunne Memorial award and in 2019 was named a Master of the Pork Industry. Scott and his wife Lisa have 2 children (Nicholas and Ellen) and live in Alexandria, MN along with their Scottish terrier, Abigail.

Zoe Davies

National Pig Association

Zoe Davies has been working for the National Pig Association since 2008, taking over as the CEO in 2014. NPA is the trade association for commercial pig producers in England and represents around 80% of the National sow herd. Whilst they cover most aspects of relevance to pig farmers, Zoe focusses on notifiable disease prevention, animal welfare and industry reputation as well as managing a small team of 4 very able staff.

Zoe began working in the pig sector back in 1995 when she started a PhD working with Cambac JMA Research looking at the welfare implications of outdoor sows systems but also helping out on the company’s own 250 sow outdoor unit. Following this she moved into the industry in 1999 managing research trials for a large pig business in East Anglia and ran their commercial indoor rearing and finishing unit. In 2000 the farm was unfortunately hit by CSF and Zoe saw first-hand the devastation such disease outbreaks can have, not only for the farmers but also for the industry as a whole. In 2002 she moved to Defra as Senior Scientific Officer in the Livestock Science unit running a £ 7 million research programme for all species, but remained determined to ensure that lessons learned in 2000 and 2001 were never forgotten.

By 2008 it was clear that being such a small cog in a massive machine was limiting her ability to influence so Zoe moved to the NPA and has never looked back. In 2012 Zoe completed a Nuffield Scholarship on ‘Movers and Shakers in global pig production’ to gain more knowledge on effective lobbying techniques.

She still works very closely on notifiable disease preparation and contingency planning with farmers, Defra and APHA and is known for regularly getting over excited about lack of regulation and control for feral and pet pigs and effective Border Control.
