Abstract:
The United States faces the challenge of mitigating a shortage of primary care clinicians. Community Health Centers (CHCs) care for over 29 million people at over 7,000 service locations in every US state and territory. Arising from the civil rights movement of the 1960s and a Community Oriented Primary Care model of care, CHCs are well positioned to play an increased role in solving the primary care provider shortage, whether through formal or informal training models. This seminar discusses the successes and challenges of one large, urban-based CHC and its collaboration with seven graduate medical education programs under a variety of models. The story of community‐based training of the next generation of primary care clinicians is still being written, so ample time will be allocated for questions and discussion.
