The 2021 Judges Forum,
Juries, Voir Dire, Batson, and Beyond: Achieving Fairness in Civil Jury Trials, is a one-day judicial educational conference. General sessions are also open to law professors and attorneys. Drawing from original academic research presented by law professors Shari Diamond (Northwestern) and Valerie Hans (Cornell), participants will consider (1) the critical role jury-related fairness issues play in civil trials (even when those cases are reviewed on appeal) and (2) how the judiciary might address jury trial fairness through the rulemaking roles of appellate judges, in creating new civil procedure rules or amending old rules, e.g. to direct trial court judges to allow challenges for bias. Judges are invited to participate in small discussion groups throughout the day. Panels of legal experts will debate the Forum papers and will engage with participants through Q&A sessions and visits to discussion groups. Judges will have the opportunity to connect live with each other through the platform before and after the Forum, and during breaks.
